AUSTIN — A new school accountability system is already creating anxiety for some educators and business leaders — not to mention students who will face much harder tests with high school graduation riding on the outcome.

The new State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, is replacing the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, or TAKS, starting this spring.

STAAR will apply to students in grades three to nine.

The new assessments will be longer, will include more open-ended questions and, for high school students, will include 12 end-of-course tests that will count toward a student’s grade-point average.
